How It All Started

I had a fascination with vintage electronics since childhood. My family had a RCA console tube radio, restored by my grandfather, in the family room of our home. I used to play with my toys in front of the radio and ask my parents if they could turn it on. I loved the deep, bass filled audio from the voices of A.M. radio hosts and how the sound filled the room with a pleasant warmth. Always fascinated with the radio and wanting to learn how it worked, I was magnetized to it. This radio was played sparingly, as my parents did not know who could fix it, or find tubes for it, as my grandfather had passed on.

Fast forward several years, at 13 years old, I was walking through an antique shop and spotted my first radio, a weathered Zenith 6-D-525. The radio was operational, however, with a more than faint humming sound being produced from the speaker. Something drew me to this radio and I had to have it. From there, my father and I teamed up and restored the cabinet with a nice lacquer finish. However, the radio wasn’t done. That hum wasn’t correct, and I wanted to figure out why it was doing this. From here, I started studying electronics and reading about how to restore tube circuits.

Throughout the next 19 years, I successfully completed many restorations of antique tube radios, moving on to amplifiers and solid state stereo receivers that were so loved through the 1970s and 1980s, as well as various other electronic devices.
